A Proposal...
As mentioned earlier in this series, we have suspended our past opinions and understandings in order to be available to a new way of thinking. The next part of the cycle requires that we take a leap of faith. We suggest that you "try this on" for size. Sometimes, an idea is more useful than it is accurate.
We are proposing that there are two distinct models available to us—at this point in our process. One that identifies with the positive, growth path, and the other that is based on the ego's need to survive.
Spiritual "Contracts" or "Agreements"
As we grow and develop, we make unconscious choices and agreements with ourselves, our families and our extended communities. And so the years pass, and we conclude that these choices are the true nature of ourselves. Our identity gets confused with agreements we have made with ourselves and with the world around us.
I call these "spiritual agreements."
There are two types of spiritual agreements – there is the God/Higher Power/True Identity/Universal agreement – that is love, harmony, fulfillment, and all the adjectives of wholeness we can think of—and I would suggest that it is a permanent and binding agreement, because it is our true identity. That no matter how hard or fast you run, we can’t outrun our destiny of greatness!
And then there is the ego-based karmic agreement to struggle, pain, illusions of unworthiness, not being good enough, abandonment, betrayal, and all the adjectives of separation we can think of. We have inadvertently made these karmic agreements through ignorance of our true nature. I believe that this agreement can not be binding, because it does not have its foundation in reality. It has its foundation in illusion, pain and suffering.
We have an opportunity in this part of the work, to recognize that all of the ways in which we have walked in pain and turmoil were based on this false, ego-based karmic agreement. That agreement includes negative thoughts and emotions—and by breaking those old negative agreements, we make ourselves available to a higher agreement and higher thoughts, which can and will change the quality of our life.
Mystic Ernest Holmes states: “What thought can do, thought can undo.”
All of us have the power to “undo” previous karmic agreements with abandonment, betrayal, rejection, disappointment, and so forth, by consciously addressing this agreement as an illusion, and making ourselves available for a new God-centered agreement to wholeness.
Let’s begin!
